Army Suicide Rate Highest in 3 Decades

Thu, 01/29/2009 - 8:51AM by Shadowdamage 7 Comments - 29 Views

As reported by: PAULINE JELINEK, Associated Press

WASHINGTON – Suicides among Army troops soared again last year and are at a nearly three-decade high, senior defense officials told The Associated Press on Thursday.

At least 128 soldiers killed themselves in 2008, said two officials who spoke on condition of anonymity because the data has not been formally released.

The final count likely will be considerably higher because more than a dozen other suspicious deaths are still being investigated and could also turn out to be self-inflicted.

The new figure of more than 128 compares to 115 in 2007 and 102 in 2006 — and is the highest since record keeping began in 1980.

It also calculates to a rate of 20.2 per 100,000 soldiers — which is higher than the adjusted civilian rate for the first time since the Vietnam War, officials said.

The Army plans to announce the figures at a news conference later Thursday.

Officials have said repeatedly that troops are under tremendous and unprecedented stress because of repeated and long tours of duty due to the simultaneous wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The stress has placed further burdens on an overwhelmed military health care system also caring for huge numbers of troops suffering from post-traumatic stress, depression and other mental health problems as well as physical care for tens of thousands of wounded.

Yearly increases in suicides have been recorded since 2004, when there were 64 — only about half the number now. And they've occurred despite increased training, prevention programs, increased psychiatric staff and other Army efforts to stem the rise.

Officials are expected to announce additional attempts to help soldiers at the news conference.

When studying individual cases, officials said they found that the most common factors for suicides were soldiers suffering problems with their personal relationships, legal or financial issues and problems on the job.

The previous number of suicides, combined, among the Army's active-duty soldiers and National Guard and Reserve troops also was the highest on record — 18.8 per 100,000. But the new pace of 20.2 suicides per 100,000 soldiers is startling because it for the first time surpasses the civilian number, when adjusted to reflect the Army's younger and male-heavy demographics.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said the suicide rate for U.S. society overall was about 11 per 100,000 in 2004, the latest year for which the agency has figures. But the Army says the civilian rate is more like 19.5 per 100,000 when adjusted.

The new rate of 20.2 — which also will be higher if more suicides are confirmed — compares to 18.8 per 100,000 in 2007, 17.5 in 2006 and 9.8 in 2002 — the first full year after the start of the war in Afghanistan

The new Army report follows one earlier this month showing that the Marine Corps recorded more suicides last year than any year since the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq in March 2003.

That report said 41 Marines were possible or confirmed suicides in 2008, or 16.8 per 100,000 troops. The Marine rate remained unchanged because the Corps is increasing in size, officials said.

Marines and Army units have borne most of duty in the two ongoing wars, which have required more use of ground forces to fight the insurgencies.

But the numbers kept by the service branches don't show the whole picture of war-related suicides because they don't include deaths after people have left the military. The Department of Veterans Affairs tracks those numbers and says there were 144 suicides among the nearly 500,000 service members who left the military from 2002-2005 after fighting in at least one of the two ongoing wars.

The true incidence of suicide among veterans is not known, according to a report last year by the Congressional Research Service. Based on numbers from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the VA estimates that 18 veterans a day — or 6,500 a year — take their own lives, but that number includes vets from all previous wars.

"The suicide numbers released today come as no surprise to the veterans' community who has experienced the psychological toll of war," said Paul Rieckhoff, director of the Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America. "But we cannot let current trend lines continue. These are preventable deaths for which the Department of Defense and the VA can and must take bold action."

Parsnip and Celeriac "Oven Chips" - easy to make as vegan/vegetarian too...

Sat, 01/10/2009 - 7:51AM by Shadowdamage 0 Comments - 91 Views

Ok, I'm on my celeriac kick (as usual) and I tried doing something besides soup this time and this veggie came thru with flying colours - AGAIN. I made these about a week ago to eat with garlic burgers (no bun though)...and they turned out delicious.

If you aren't sure what "celeriac" is, you may know it as "celery root" or "root celery". Its an underloved, underappreciated, TASTY and versatile veg that keeps very well until you are ready to cook it, has much less starch than potatoes and can be used in almost any way you want, from soups to fries to mash.

So anyways...

I basically used about a tablespoon of organic coconut oil and a tablespoon of butter for the entire recipe and quickly (20 secs or so) melted in a microwave.

(I do not cook with ANY polyunsaturated oils/liquid oils. Its not good for you, or the oil, to be heated. It creates "trans fats" - nasty, horrible things you do not want anywhere near your body. When I need to cook/fry/heat oil I always use butter, ghee, or organic virgin coconut oil...I use olive oil only as a drizzle or added after-the-fact.)

If you wanted to make this vegan I guess all you need to do is use the coconut oil and leave out the butter - then you're good to go, I think! Being one of those carnivore types myself, its not a requirement (butter is loaded with vitamin A and I also love it)...but its an option if it suits you, should taste fine.

Smiling

Aaanyway...

I chopped some peeled parsnips and celeriac into "french fry" width and shapes, and also VERY briefly blanched the celeriac to make sure they wouldn't be bitter.

Then, I put them into a big baking pan, tossed with the melted butter/oil mixture before seasoning with sea salt, black pepper and some curry powder.

Baked about 25 mins in the oven at uh...well 220 celsius, whatever that is, and voila - even BETTER than potatoes, with more flavor....but virtually the same in terms of texture - and went great with the burger!

In fact the celeriac did better than the parsnips, which got a bit too well done and are slightly sweeter - for the more "potato" taste and texture, celeriac was awesome. I am going to leave out the parsnips next time I think altogether....!

They are GOOD, just as good if not better and more flavourful than potatoes! I did slightly overcook mine (30 minutes I think, was too long) and so they are a bit browner here but the insides were still lovely and fluffy.

Served with the usual ketchup was nice but they were also fantastic with mayonnaise. (Curry and mayo is good together.....whether slightly salty or sweet. It is the base of a very popular chicken salad in Britain called "Coronation Chicken" which has a sweet edge, using fruits as well as the chicken, mayo and spices.

Disgraced pastor Haggard says better Christian, "completely hetero" now...

Sat, 01/10/2009 - 3:16AM by Shadowdamage 7 Comments - 38 Views

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Ted Haggard, the powerful U.S. evangelist who fell from grace in 2006 amid a gay sex scandal, returned to the spotlight on Friday saying his faith was stronger but he wished people had been more forgiving.

Haggard, 52, was exiled from the New Life mega-church he founded and told by church elders to leave Colorado after admitting "sexual immorality" and buying methamphetamines from a male prostitute.

It was a stunning admission for the president of the National Association of Evangelicals, a formidable force among U.S. conservative Christians and a group that had the ear of the White House.

An HBO documentary about Haggard's year in exile, his struggle with his sexuality in the face of his past condemnation of gays, and his attempts to make a living outside the church, will air on the cable TV network on January 29.

Haggard, his wife Gayle and two of his five children appeared on a panel for U.S. television critics on Friday to promote the documentary, "The Trials of Ted Haggard." He had previously been barred by evangelical leaders from speaking to the media.

"I don't think it is a flattering piece. I think it is even-handed," Haggard told Reuters in an interview. "It is embarrassing for me for people to see it, but it does answer their questions."

Haggard refers to himself in the documentary as a sinner who deserved the punishment meted out to him. He says he came close to suicide.

'I DESERVED IT'

But he said the year his family spent living in cheap motels or the homes of friends had ultimately strengthened his faith -- although he held out no hope of returning to work as a pastor.

"I can't imagine very many churches inviting me to speak, even though I am a better Christian now and have a better understanding of scriptures than ever," said Haggard, who is back in Colorado working as a life insurance salesman.

"It has strengthened my faith. I do wish others had been more forgiving toward me. But I think those who hate me and judge me had a reason. I deserved it."

Three weeks after church elders told Haggard to leave and ordered him to undergo "spiritual restoration," they announced that after counseling he was "completely heterosexual."

Yahoo News: Yellowstone: Volcano in Waiting? Recent tremors cause concern

Since Dec. 26, about 400 temblors have rumbled under the park, centered under the northern end of Yellowstone Lake. The small quakes Friday registered up to a magnitude of 3.5. Swarms of small earthquakes happen frequently in Yellowstone, but it's very unusual for so many earthquakes to happen over several days, says Robert Smith, a professor of geophysics at the University of Utah.

"They're certainly not normal," Smith said. "We haven't had earthquakes in this energy or extent in many years."

Mother of Bristol Palin's Fiance' Arrested on Felony Drug Charges

Sat, 12/20/2008 - 2:53AM by Shadowdamage 2 Comments - 20 Views

The only thing I can add to this post is..its certainly a troubled world. A part of me sees this as old news, anything "Palin"..and another part of me simply sees this story as an interesting insight into the lives of these people thrust into the limelight recently.

As this wasn't covered here, I thought I would post it...not knowing more about the situation, I will refrain from making any other comments for the time being.

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (Reuters) - The mother of an 18-year-old man who plans to marry Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin's pregnant daughter, Bristol, has been arrested on drug charges, authorities said on Friday.

Sherry Johnston, 42, was taken into custody at her home in Wasilla, Alaska, on Thursday after an undercover narcotics investigation, Alaska State Troopers said in a statement.

She faces six counts of misconduct involving a controlled substance, said trooper spokeswoman Megan Peters. She was released on $5,000 bail shortly after her arrest. All the charges are felonies.

Peters declined to release any further information about the case, saying police needed to protect the investigation.

Sarah Palin, the Republican vice presidential nominee in the 2008 election, revealed during the campaign her 18-year-old daughter was pregnant and that Levi Johnston was the father.

The two have said they plan to marry and Bristol Palin is due to give birth this weekend.

Rant about reporting comments....are you serious?

Sun, 12/14/2008 - 2:17AM by Shadowdamage 10 Comments - 102 Views

Ok..... so I log in over the weekend to muse over the headlines, only to find that someone whined about something I said - something that, quite clearly, was meant to criticize a person's "tone" and choice of words - NOT THEM, NOT THEIR OPINION - but how they come across.

But because people cannot correctly interpret the language - I get reported.

Is this common here?

When I say something "makes someone seem"....a certain way, its deliberately to DE-personalize it. Its my attempt to tell someone "look, I'm not saying YOU are this way, but the words give off a bad impression."

But evidently that's still not good enough, evidently that comment still stings to someone who evidently can dish it out - but not take it. (Since I didn't report her for sweeping, rude generalizations in the past, or this time, or her response to me to "get a sense of humor." Silly me, I have better things to do than care.)

Here's a tip - if you can't handle a criticism of your tone, or choice of words, then an internet forum is probably not a very good place for you.

Seriously. Grow up.

How General Motors Violated Your Trust

Fri, 12/12/2008 - 3:50AM by Shadowdamage 1 Comment - 21 Views

An interesting article I found on Harvard Business Online which reviews the auto industry crisis from a different perspective.

About the author, John Quelch: John Quelch was one of ten marketing experts profiled in the 2007 book, Conversations with Marketing Masters, authored by Laura Mazur and Louella Miles. A professor at Harvard Business School since 1979, he is known worldwide for his research on global marketing, global branding and marketing communications.

John is a non-executive director of WPP Group plc, the world’s second largest marketing services company, and of Pepsi Bottling Group. He served previously as a director of Reebok International.

"In a fascinating mea culpa, General Motors has finally discovered the consumer (also known as the taxpayer). Desperate to achieve bailout funding, GM admitted in a December 8 advertisement titled "GM's Commitment to the American People" that it had "disappointed", sometimes even "violated" the "trust" of American consumers. The advertisement went unsigned and was published only in Automotive News.

I support loaning money to GM to keep the company afloat. The state of the US economy is too perilous at this time to contemplate the alternative. But I am far from convinced that my tax dollars will be well-invested.

Sadly, this year marks General Motors 100th anniversary. A proud - perhaps too proud - company that lost its way in the global marketplace. Perhaps the current crisis will galvanize the forces of change. Or perhaps the weaknesses in the company's culture - specifically, the lack of consistent attention to excellence in design , in marketing and in product quality - are simply too endemic."

Read Mr. Quelch's blog post in full at the URL below, including his itemized list of reasons GM failed from a marketing perspective.

Detroit Workers Stunned, Angered as Bailout Stalls..

Fri, 12/12/2008 - 3:47AM by Shadowdamage 0 Comments - 16 Views

By Kevin Krolicki

DETROIT (Reuters) - William Ford, an unemployed auto worker, grew angry and resigned and then angry again when he thought about the political debate that has stalled a bailout for the once-proud automakers that built Detroit.

"If they can spend billions on war and billions to bail out Wall Street, then they can help the Big Three," said Ford, who was waiting for a bus next to a Chrysler plant on Thursday afternoon as the U.S. Senate debated tightening up terms of a rescue package for the industry.

"We need this help. This is supposed to be the United States," said Ford, 25, who was laid off from his job in a Chrysler LLC engine plant in March.

Ford says he is frustrated with auto chief executives and their private jets, frustrated with Detroit's reputation for shoddy quality, and frustrated that the fate of an industry that has sustained his family for three generations has come to this: a handout from Washington.

"Never in my life did I think we'd see the Big Three crash like this," Ford said.

At Chrysler's nearby Jefferson North assembly plant, the sign still reads DaimlerChrysler though private equity firm Cerberus Capital Management bought Chrysler in August 2007.

Chrysler has announced a $1.8 billion plan to retool the plant to build a new Jeep model. But Chrysler's financial crisis and doubts in its ability to survive even if it clinches a federal loan have thrown its plans into uncertainty.

Just down Jefferson Avenue, General Motors Corp has dimmed some of the lights at its headquarters as it waits for word on whether lawmakers will approve its request for $8 billion in loans to pay bills through January.

WAITING AND WAITING

Like workers at Chrysler and Ford Motor Co, GM's factory workers will be asked to make more sacrifices as the shrunken United Auto Workers union offers new concessions.

UAW-represented GM workers in Flint have been gearing up to make fuel-efficient engines for a new generation of GM small cars, such as the Chevrolet Cruze.

As recently as September, the future looked unexpectedly bright for Flint. GM Chief Executive Rick Wagoner announced a new $370 million plant for the Michigan city, where GM's roots go deep and unemployment already runs over 10 percent.

"I just walked out of a meeting with 350 retirees, and I had to tell them that I don't know what's going to happen," said Bill Jordan, a UAW local president in Flint. "I don't know what's going to happen to their benefits. I don't know what's going to happen to GM."

"Kick a Ginger Day" at Canadian School causes injury to teen

Sat, 11/29/2008 - 2:27AM by Shadowdamage 5 Comments - 73 Views

I always knew in Scotland that having red hair, or "being ginger" usually earned you a bad rap.

Evidently these red-headed kids in Canada are finding things just as hard...."National Kick a Ginger Day" resulting in a Facebook page created to spread the word, and the subsequent battery and bruising of at least once student.

Student Ken Logel said: "I have a few buddies with red hair, you just kind of kick them lightly just as a joke but when it gets carried away that's not cool."

Ooohkay.

You know, I enjoy Southpark. Its one of my favourite programs, having found out about it way back with the original "Christmas Card" that circulated on the net many years ago.

However, I am beginning to think we have some real idiots watching Southpark these days....never ONCE have I watched Southpark and thought "Oh hey, that's a GOOD IDEA, I AM GOING TO GO DO THAT."

Too many e-numbers in your crisps, kiddos? Has the world gotten this idiotic?

Yes..I fear it has.

One of these kids may grow up to be your doctor. Yeesh.

I am grateful to be able to take a moment to acknowledge the little things that make a moment so perfect.
